In the UK Midwives have responsibility for mothers and their newborn babies for up to 28 days following birth. This does not mean you will need to be visited every day for 28 days. Most midwives practice what is called ‘selective visiting’ that is visiting that is tailor-made to the needs of you and your baby.

For some women who have given birth before and cared for a new-born baby including successful breast feeding, the midwife may transfer her care to the Health Visitor around the 10th-14th day after the birth. On the other hand if it is a first baby and the mother needs lots of support adapting to this new role the midwife may visit more often and for longer.

I live in the U.S. It’s not common here for midwives to visit you after the birth. We, unfortunately, do it all alone. Unless we are blessed with help from family and friends.
