How to make safe formula feed for your baby

Like most parents, you might think that if you follow the directions on the container all will be well, when formula feeding is more involved then that. Here are a few simple steps to help you on your way.

1. Wash your hands completely with hot soapy water.
2. Also with hot soapy water wash all bottle items. Including bottles, nipples, and caps. Rinse well and let air dry.Wipe off formula can before each use.

4. Use water that has been boiled for 5 minutes. Hot tap water alone should not be used. Hot tap water often has higher lead amounts, which can be very dangerous.
5. Using the formula suggested by your doctor mix with water in strict measurements.
6. Pour into ready bottles with enough in each bottle for one feeding. Throw out any formula left over at end of feeding.
7. You should make only enough bottles to last through one day. Never keep formula for more then 48 hours.
8. Once formula is mixed, keep refrigerated. Formula that is not refrigerated is not good to use after 2 hours at room temperature and should be thrown out.
9. When heating formula for a feeding it is best to warm on the stove in a pan of water. If you choose to use a microwave, be aware that microwaves cause hot spots. Heat a 6-8 oz bottle for about 30 seconds, shake, and let sit for about 1 minute before feeding to your baby.
