Milk can reduce risks for pregnant women

Milk can reduce risks for pregnant women according to a new study undertaken by the World Health Organisation. (WHO)

Across the globe, pregnant women are failing to consume the recommended daily supply of calcium - about 1.2g.

But a WHO study of 8,300 women found that a simple calcium supplement could massively reduce complications associated with pregnancy, cutting the risks to women by 24 per cent, the chance of premature birth by 20 per cent and the risk of newborns dying by 30 per cent.

Amongst other things the study says:

  • Four glasses of milk a day can reduce serious risks to pregnant women
  • World Health Organisation say a calcium supplement can cut risks by 24%
  • Milk-drinkers have lower risks of pre-term delivery and neonatal deaths

  • Although the WHO study was of women from developing countries, Dr Villar said women in Scotland also suffered from a lack of calcium. According to the national diet and nutrition survey, 34 per cent of women between 19 and 24 in the UK do not drink milk, against 51 per cent of 25 to 34-year-olds and 57 per cent of 35 to 49-year-olds.

The WHO team found that severe complications such as serious hypertension and a condition where the placenta breaks away from the womb were reduced in those taking supplements.

Milk-drinkers also had much lower risks of pre-term delivery and neonatal deaths.

And women who had the optimal dose of calcium also had about a 20 per cent lower risk of ending up in intensive care, having to have an operation or dying as a result of pregnancy.

Dr Villar, the WHO’s director of maternal and perinatal health, said just a few yoghurts, a glass of milk and a portion of cheese a day could help reduce the dangers for pregnant women and their babies.

    He said:

Women under 20 are at particular risk of these complications and would benefit from consuming more calcium, All women should be sure that they have at least 1.2g of calcium during pregnancy
